This is the final installment of our look at Camp Wishe, a children’s sleepaway camp that has been abandoned for more than 15 years. Click here for part 1 and here for part 2! At this point in our tour, you’ve hopefully come to know Camp Wishe as a classic American sleepaway camp, a warm…
The American Gardens Building (AND Dorsia – What a Day!)
Just got done scouting the American Gardens building on West 81st Street and CANNOT WAIT to post pictures. Unfortunately, don’t have time now, as I finally got a lunch reservation at Dorsia (tip: just keep calling). Full post Monday! -SCOUT PS – Really surprised they haven’t gotten rid of the stains on the 11th floor…
Inside An Old Airplane Factory
Some time ago, I had the opportunity to scout the defunct Grumman airplane factory in Bethpage, Long Island. Once the leading manufacturer of everything from F-14’s to the Apollo Lunar Module, Grumman was bought by a larger company in the 1990’s and moved out of Bethpage. The enormous complex is now being converted into residential…
Attention Florida Dog Lovers!
Speaking of dogs, a good friend of mine in Florida works with a dog rescue group, and recently wrote to see if I could help with a few dogs that are in desperate need of a new home. I know this is a NY blog, but we’ve got readers all over the place, and after…
Over The Door
As you can tell from the recent posts, I’ve been spending a lot of time around the West 70’s recently. Two quick doorways: I like the little relief over this doorway, in which two angels (or babies?) are holding a cloth that has the building number written on it. I think I like it because…
Stopping By Archie Bunker’s House in Queens
Last week, I was scouting in the Middle Village/Glendale area of Queens when I realized I was close to an address I’d been meaning to check out. Only thing was, as I pulled up to the house, I couldn’t remember why I’d written it down. Over the years, I’ve saved up a number of Google…

$8.25 for a pack of cigarettes? Yikes!
No body should smoke.
It would be the “things” that would entice me! Your blog is the first thing I reach for in the morning.
The invisable, the neglected, the overlooked- You are a saint!
Well, sure, Linda Sue, but still, that’s nearly twice what they cost here in Minnesota.
really into your site, love the old candy store signs too.
I love that the store is so narrow that its sign extends onto the building next door.
It’s things like this that I would visit N.Y. for…….
We grew up going to that store all the time after walking back from the central park pool..
They used to have the best cheap sandwiches we could afford as kids…this is from where we saw the “seven-ups” movie being filmed in the 70’s – one of the better car chase flicks ever
I don’t understand what’s the big deal about this place, I live right across the street from it and all day I see people sitting in front of the store just hanging out (sometimes being loud and disruptive), I have yet to see real customers walking in and out. How do they make a profit? They open and close unpredictably and sometimes they’re not open at all! I haven’t been inside yet because I’m not sure if they actually want to sell stuff or just chill.
