One of the things I love about New York skyscrapers is how they’ll show up nestled between smaller buildings when you’re not expecting it. I was walking down 3rd Ave yesterday when the Empire State Building came into view perfectly, almost as if the neighborhood layout was planned for this purpose (hard to take a good picture of it due to the lighting).

Good pic or no, still a great view. Also? Word to the loving Skyscrapers peeping above unexpectedly.
This will sound extremely dorky, but I’m reading The Fountainhead, and this shot reminds me of that Henry Cameron, who in his reduced circumstances, had to take small office space in a not-so-great neighborhood, but he picked it, because when he pressed his nose to the glass, and looked over a brick wall, he could see the top of his Dana Building. Sad.
I know exactly what you mean… gorgeous!
Very neat. When I was there in April, I spent most of a day shooting the Chrysler Building, starting from the lobby and working my way out. Got a few shots like this, too.

Few cities have NY’s legendary skyline, but Toronto’s tallest buildings peek up over the smaller Victorian row houses on my street just like the Empire State building in your shot. I’m always cheered up when I walk to work and see the CN Tower peeking between the rooflines.
Even if you don’t live in them, some buildings just make where you live feel like home.
Out here is San Francisco I see the Transamerica Pyramid poking up in odd places as I walk around town, as does the Golden Gate Bridge. I grew up here and am always surprised to see the GG Bridge from a different angle.
I like that the building in the foreground are so dark while the Empire State Building is glowing in the sunlight. There’s a metaphor in that but I can’t express it at the moment.
what is that awesome building to right? that sort of red brick not-quite-a-skyscraper ?
looks old as hell but really awesome.
love your stuff man, this is one of the coolest sites out there.
I am a New Zealander who was in Toronto for a university exchange this past year and fulfilled a dream when I went to New York.. Without stating the obvious it was amazing, and I didn’t spend long enough there. Can you ever? This blog encapsulates the whole idea that you could never know New York entirely, there is always something that will surprise you – even if you live there..
Anyway I wanted to post a response because I think I have this exact shot, and I too loved the way these iconic buildings just popped out to say hello.. And an American flag is often neatly situated for perfect photo-taking opportunities (as if you wouldn’t know that was the Empire State Building, but there is something so perfect about the American flag being in the shot too…)
Thanks for your blog – it will keep me familiar with NYC until the next time I can visit…
