Century-Old Steampunk Hiding In A Hospital Basement
Last week, I was scouting a hospital basement for interesting spaces when I happened to notice something lurking in one corner… …this enormous iron wheel-shaped machine: As it turns out, this was part of the original steam generator system that powered the hospital in the early 1900s (now long since out of use). Made by…
Times Square Recycle Billboard Made From Recyclables
Note: This is long gone. I was scouting near Times Square on Friday when I noticed this neat new billboard on 7th Ave… Apparently, it’s promoting Best Buy’s electronics recycle program, and if you look closely… …you’ll see that the letters are actually made from recycled electronics! I wish they had made it a little…
Burger-Klein!
I love stumbling on New York’s ghost signs – essentially, signs or advertisements for businesses long since deceased. I wrote about the great stationery store sign hanging on Broadway just north of Canal Street a year ago (I promise, that arrow doesn’t lead to greeting cards anymore): Anyway, I was driving by the intersection yesterday,…
Inside the Paramount Theatre, Shuttered For Over 25 Years
Whenever I drive down Bay Street in Staten Island… …I always wonder about the boarded-up movie theater between Union and Prospect. Shuttered for over 25 years, this was once the art deco Paramount Theatre, one of Staten Island’s grandest movie theaters. Built on the site of Cornelius Vanderbilt’s childhood farmhouse, the Paramount opened in October,…
Was This Midtown Hardware Store Once A Theater?
So here’s a mystery. A few months ago, I got an email from reader Matthew J. advising me to check out Brothers Hardware at 26 West 38th Street. The shop is pretty unassuming from the outside… But go inside…
Want To Take A Trip To 1940s New York? Step Into Mishkin’s Drug Store
UPDATE: This is now gone. Last week, I was scouting around 145th Street at night, which gave me the perfect opportunity to shoot one of my favorite neon signs in all its glory: Mishkin’s Drugs. I love this sign. Part of it is its simplicity and compact dimensions; part of it is the perfect color…

Wonderful! What building is this view from?
I second that, where is this building?! Such a gorgeous view
Gorgeous. I think I might stay in there all day. The reality is that whoever lives there probably doesn’t even notice it anymore.
I don’t live in the city, but neither of my bathrooms have windows. One has a skylight though.
I have the opposite view from the Brooklyn/Dumbo side on the 29th floor in JCondo.
Is this a view from the Muni bulding? This looks just like what I used to see from the handicapped stall in the ladies room on the 17th floor when I worked there.
it would be nicer if the bathtub was higher.. that way you would really be enjoying the view when you’re sitting in the tub..
With a view like that who needs to read a book while on the throne.
Thats amazing, i would love to live there.
The men’s room at the Rainbow Room is up a narrow flight of stairs – standing at the urinals you have an incredible unimpeded view of Central Park. Fortunately the opposite isn’t also true…
The bath Room in the crysler bldg has a better view
