How To Launch A Nuclear Missile In The 1960’s
After exploring and researching the abandoned Cold War-era missile silo in the Saranac valley I posted about on Monday, the one big question I still had was: how do you actually fire the missile? I speculated that this device might be a part of it… Turns out, I was right. A reader by the name…

The Complete Guide To New York City Horror Movies
Frankenstorm threatening to ruin your Halloween this year? No problem! Why not stay in, pop some corn, turn off the lights (if the storm hasn’t already taken care of that for you), and settle in with a horror movie set in New York City?
The Sightseer’s Guide to Being Stuck in Traffic on I-87
Over the past week, I’ve been taking I-87 North to scout in Rockland County… …which means I’ve spent about an hour each day stuck in this: As anyone who travels it regularly knows, I-87 can be a hellhole of traffic due to the unholy convergence of multiple interstates and local bridges in the most inopportune…
An Unholy Union
Driving through Queens today, I saw that McDonalds and Starbucks have finally done the inevitable and fused together into an all-powerful red and yellow-striped latte and hamburger-dispensing mutant hybrid: Resistance is futile! I mean, what force on Earth could possibly stop a complete McStarnolds take over?? I think we’re doomed. -SCOUT
The Adventure of Travel
In my post on Bloomingdale’s Le Train Blue restaurant, I mentioned how much I love old travel advertising. To me, vintage travel ads were about the adventure of travel, about the mysteries and romance waiting for you at just the cost of a ticket, and how getting somewhere was part of the experience. Nice job tracking these down.
I loooove this movie! Every time I watch it I mourn anew the loss of those great old wood turnstiles that used to be in the subway system, the wood smoothed and discolored by years of hands touching them, the real push you had to give them (because they were not light), the clunking sound they made as they turned to let you through.
Can’t wait until Monday!
Though it’s marked the 96 St. Station, the modern picture looks like my 72nd Street Station… of course, the movie shot could be the 72nd St. Station made to look like the 96th for some reason.
It is definitely the 72nd Street station. The message on the glass says so. The 96th Street station has been remodeled extensively in the last few years, so it’s all changed around, but I think until recently the only entrances were from the sidewalk, nothing from the boulevard strip as on on 72nd. So the movie may have used 72nd to shoot. Either one would make sense with the scenes in Riverside Park.
Come out and play-e-ay!

Dude! Cool! I was wondering when you’d get around to the Warriors!!
Warriors. I love this flick. Can’t wait to see this done in your inimitable style.
The statue seems to be very worn now since the time of the movie, it needs restoration.
LOVE that movie! Can’t wait to see your post on this!
P.S. The 96th St station is still there, isn’t it? I seem to remember it’s on the Broadway median, but it’s not in use anymore.
The 96th St station house that is . . .
