Gone Forever: The Ghost House In Queens

In June ’11, I wrote about one of my favorite “haunted house”-like properties in New York City, a dilapidated yet once beautiful Victorian located at 3103 37th Avenue in Queens:

Several readers sent me this article in the Queens Gazette about its recent demise. Can’t wait to see what goes up in its place.

You can read my original post here. It was probably beyond saving at that point, but then, greater miracles have happened.

  1. Your last two posts have really reminded me of how many things I take for granted in the city. Until I read this post, I never realized that the abandoned falling apart house that I passed every day on the subway was the same one you had posted about not even two weeks before I moved to Astoria. And until your last post, it barely phased me that there were townhouses on 6th Avenue, right across the street from my office. Thank you for making me take another look at the things around me.

  2. Oy! Did anyone mention the horrible grammar in that “article”? Razed…not raised. It is a shame about the building, but sometimes they do have to come down.

  3. One of the pics in the old post showed what looked like holes in the roof, and that’s a real death knell to these old houses. Water -> Rot -> Unsalvageable.

  4. I wonder why kids today can’t write or spell? It’s because they read all these mistakes in their local paper. The correct word is RAZED, not RAISED. What kind of newspaper is this? And it should read IT not I in the last sentence. And the damned house was not on 30th Avenue! It was closer to 36th Avenue!!!

  5. I can tell you what’s going up there in its place… an Arby’s or one of those shit box light brick rectangles with garish shiny balconies you see everywhere these days.

  6. I used to love passing this place on the train. Thanks for keeping it alive, if only on the internet.

  7. My brother recommended I might like this website. He was totally
right. This post actually made my day. You can not imagine just how much time I had spent for this info!
    Thanks!
