The Amazing Wizard Of Park Ave
Merry Belated Christmas/Happy Hanukkah/Holidays/Etc.! I was grappling with two enormous backpacks on my way out of the city on Tuesday when I noticed this great cast-iron (?) clock on the Schwarzenbach Building at 470 Park Avenue South btw. 31st & 32nd Street. In my pictures it looks prominent, but this is something you’d almost assuredly…
The 1920s Movie Theater Hidden In A Rite Aid
Don’t let the squat little Rite Aid storefront on Manhattan Ave in Greenpoint fool you… It has a big history. A movie theater for most of its life, you can see it below in 1928 when it was known as the Fox Meserole showing silent films (the advertised Baby Mine was made in 1928 –…
A NY Road Sign the DOT Forgot About
I think this is quite possibly my favorite road sign in New York: You can find this decaying sign on Seagirt Boulevard just before you cross the bridge to Atlantic Beach in south Queens. But the real question is: what the heck does this sign mean? You’re already in the middle of New York when…
The Greek Temple At 28th Street
I was walking south down Broadway from 34th Street today when I saw this pretty amazing temple perched on top of a building at the corner of 28th Street: See it, jutting out from the left hand corner? It’d be sort of boring if it was just a building motif that spanned the entire top…
Halloween Reading: Grave’s End – A Haunting In Brooklyn
I don’t believe in ghosts, but if there’s one book that has ever made me wonder, it’s Grave’s End by Brooklyn native Elaine Mercado. Seriously – this thing gave me chills.
Scouting The Remains of Brooklyn’s Incredible Paramount Movie Theatre
In my travels through the city, I’ve driven down the northern end of Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn roughly eight billion times… …and I have never once given a second thought to the nondescript office building at Dekalb, part of the Long Island University campus. And I don’t think I ever would have if I hadn’t…

My brother once went on a criss-cross US road trip with a friend. They had a similar set-up.
They skipped the canoe, and instead strapped a full waterbed mattress to the top of the van to have water the whole way. A ‘single’ waterbed mattress can hold about 125-130 gallons… that’s a long way between refills.

Wow, love this van.
what year is it??
I hope that canoe is used and is not just there for posterity’s sake.
i see this down in red hook a lot as well. such a rad van!
Nick, A buddy of mine here in FL has an old air conditioned VW van. The air conditioning comes from the rust holes in the body. Perhaps it is needless to say that it doesn’t look this good. 🙂
OH, I love this van! Looking at it makes my heart skip a beat.
This van belongs to Billy – one of cutest dogs to pound Brooklyn pavement. I love Billy.
Billy parked his butt in the passenger seat while his owner (man’s best friend, and all that…) traversed Brooklyn streets in search of a blank canvas pleading for some color……
Their street art in Williamsburg & Red Hook was ubiquitous and always signed, “Love, Billy”
Well, Scout, to each his own. My choice would be this bus, often parked above Cooper Union:
