Treasures on the East 25th Street Courthouse
One of my favorite buildings in Manhattan is the marble courthouse on 25th & Madison, home to the Appellate Division of the NY State Supreme Court. It’s a charmingly compact building at only three stories high, completely dwarfed by the surrounding skyscrapers (I snagged this picture from Flickr user IneT, as the building was hidden…

Is Mad Max Driving A Limo In New York?
Last week, I was driving down Division Place in Greenpoint when I noticed something at the corner of Porter Avenue… …what has to be the weirdest limo I have ever seen: Once a normal Lincoln Towncar, the body has been covered in metalwork straight out of Mad Max: Everything is jagged and menacing, from the…

This past week, I was heading to a show at Madison Square Garden when I happened to notice a building on West 31st Street that has always intrigued me… The granite behemoth at 242 West 31st: When you first see it, you might assume it to be just an old bank building, or perhaps a…

The Last Five Stand-Alone Diners in Manhattan
Last week, I was walking around the Financial District when I found myself staring at the little diner on Pearl Street in amazement. The number of crackheads showing up at the regional offices…
I’ve been here. It’s across the street from a bowling alley, and I can tell you from experience, when you stumble out of that bowling alley more than a little drunk at 1 AM and see the White Castle across the street, you probably won’t be so impressed at the regional office’s adherence to the brand.
If they lobby doesn’t have bulletproof plastic dividers and a haze of grease on anything then it is all a sham.
Have you seen the headquarters? http://www.interestingideas.com/ii/pix/castle4.jpg
(We used to drive past it on the way to my grandparents’ growing up.)
Even the national headquarters building in Ohio has a bit of the castle motif.
Back in the Summer of 1981, I was with a group of friends coming back from a club on Long Island late at night and we stopped at the WC in Lynbrook. While we were inside ordering food, one of my friends was robbed at knifepoint while urinating behind the building. Two weeks later, we stopped again convinced we would be safe this time. This time someone ripped a chain from another friends neck. We laughed about it then and everytime we occassionally get togethe since. But it is wild how White Castle is so synonymous with crime for most people.
I go past this place all the time. It looks like a White Castle and a post office had a baby. I think it’s the flag pole that gives it the post office vibe.
