Someone Planted a Bicycle Garden in Queens!
Note: this has since been removed. I was driving along Vernon Blvd in Queens when I spotted something you don’t usually see under the 59th Street Bridge… A bicycle garden! Or, to be specific, a row of flowers made out of old bike parts: Very inventive stuff – check out this sunflower… The group responsible…
Amazing Vintage Electronics Store Sign In Brooklyn
I was early for an appointment at a Brooklyn college this afternoon to shoot some science labs, so I stopped for lunch in Park Slope. A Yelp search told me that Roma’s Pizza was decent (3/5 stars in my book), and as I was parking, I noticed this appliance store… J&R TV (108 7th Ave…
Studebaker of Bedford Avenue
I was driving down Bedford Ave around the Crown Heights area in Brooklyn when I passed this great neo-Gothic building at Sterling Place…and noticed something that made me stop and get out to take pictures. Right at the top center of the curve is this emblem: Crazy, right? Apparently, this was once an auto showroom…
Shopping Cart Gets Cement Shoes In Williamsburg Park
Note: This is no longer there. I was walking by the small, triangle-shaped Macri Park in Williamsburg near the Lorimer stop today… …when I noticed something that I think is new… At the corner by Metropolitan and Meeker, someone has dumped a 4-foot x 4-foot mound of cement with a Home Depot shopping cart embedded…
The Abandoned Farm Cemetery in Queens
Staring down 54th Street from 31st Ave in Woodside, Queens, a street lined with boxy brick apartments and a scant bit of foliage, one would not expect to find one of the oldest cemeteries in New York nestled in amongst the buildings… But there it is, halfway down the block: the Moore-Jackson Cemetery, founded in…
The Owls of PS 110
Next time you’re heading over the Williamsburg Bridge to Brooklyn, either driving or on the pedestrian walkway, be sure to check out the public school on the south side. PS 110 (the Florence Nightingale school) has one of my favorite school adornments in the city… …a roof covered in owls! They’re perched everywhere, from these…

The number of crackheads showing up at the regional offices…
I’ve been here. It’s across the street from a bowling alley, and I can tell you from experience, when you stumble out of that bowling alley more than a little drunk at 1 AM and see the White Castle across the street, you probably won’t be so impressed at the regional office’s adherence to the brand.
If they lobby doesn’t have bulletproof plastic dividers and a haze of grease on anything then it is all a sham.
Have you seen the headquarters? http://www.interestingideas.com/ii/pix/castle4.jpg
(We used to drive past it on the way to my grandparents’ growing up.)
Even the national headquarters building in Ohio has a bit of the castle motif.
Back in the Summer of 1981, I was with a group of friends coming back from a club on Long Island late at night and we stopped at the WC in Lynbrook. While we were inside ordering food, one of my friends was robbed at knifepoint while urinating behind the building. Two weeks later, we stopped again convinced we would be safe this time. This time someone ripped a chain from another friends neck. We laughed about it then and everytime we occassionally get togethe since. But it is wild how White Castle is so synonymous with crime for most people.
I go past this place all the time. It looks like a White Castle and a post office had a baby. I think it’s the flag pole that gives it the post office vibe.
