Is Scouting NY As Enjoyable As A Toilet Brush? A Helpful Guide

Yesterday, I received this e-mail from a reader:

letter

An interesting question. Really, how to put a value on content you’re used to getting for free?

After much thought, I realized the only solution is to compare the enjoyment you get from Scouting NY to products you buy without much thought. In other words, if you get as much enjoyment out of one of the following as you do an entire year of original content from Scouting NY, perhaps that’s an appropriate donation amount? A few choice examples:

TOILETBRUSH

04

05

Goal: $30,000

Raised so far: $18,984.06

Readers Who
Donated: 882

In all seriousness, every penny counts, and if every reader donated something (ha, there are quite a lot more than 842 of you out there!), we’d cruise past the goal in no time.

I know everyone hates the week on NPR where they bore you with fundraising, and trust me when I say asking for money makes me immensely uncomfortable.  But if all the hours I spend producing Scouting NY can somehow circle back to help my film project, it makes me feel like that time was well-spent working to achieve my dream of becoming a director.

As always, thank you.

  1. These give a great perspective on the matter, Scout. I’d love to contribute, once we can dig out from under our home repair debt from Sandy.

I do have one question. I really like the way the text you add to images renders. I’ve tried a bunch of different programs for adding text to photos, but none of them look as good as yours. Would you be able to say what program you use to add text? And any other tips along these lines?

    Thanks,
    Sean

    1. Hey Sean,

No worries about my film, fix the house!!

There’s nothing special about the font – I use Photoshop…Type the text…Apply “stroke” to the layer of about 2 or 3 pixels…and Voila!

  2. Just paid my annual subscription. Would have donated more but am saving for a trip to Mt Madahodo.

Thanks for all of the hard work, Scout.
