The Creepy Book-Reading Gargoyle at West 181st Street
I was waiting at a light yesterday at the corner of 181st and Fort Washington Ave, when I happened to look up at the building on the corner… …and noticed a line of human gargoyles perched near the top. But one in particular quickly caught my eye… A very creepy book-reading gargoyle.
Could I Get A Hand Holding This Thing?
One of my favorite blocks in Manhattan is West 46th Street btw. 5th and 6th Avenues. An incredibly diverse mix of styles are represented there, ranging from art deco buildings to brownstones. All were built prior to 1930 and very little has been done since, making the block essentially an architectural museum. West 46th is…
Back In Time In Midwood
Nothing is better than driving through a neighborhood I’ve never been to and stumbling on something like this: You can find this amazing art-moderne building at the corner of Beverley Rd and Bedford Ave, and when I say Bedford Ave, I don’t mean a stretch in Williamsburg/Greenpoint, or Bed-Stuy. Some of you might be surprised…
The Singing Statues at St. John The Divine
In the south-western corner on the St John The Divine property is Synod Hall, a large indoor space available for functions (movies often rent it for catering and extras holding purposes when shooting in the area). I noticed something on my last job there – the statues in the arch above the front doors can…
Rattlesnakes and Buffalo on the Upper West Side: A Southwestern Art Deco Masterpiece
Last week, I was taking pictures of the bridge over 96th Street on Riverside Drive… …when a detail caught my eye on the apartment building to the north… This bit of decoration on the corner… …featuring a buffalo skull with ceremonial decorations: As I stared at it, I started to notice more interesting details, like…
The Dragon House on West 76th Street
I was scouting around the West 70’s over by Riverside Drive when I saw this really, really interesting building ornamented in an incredible dragon motif (map link): It’s literally covered in dragons, starting with these lining the balcony, each with its own shield: These two look like they’re sharing a joke: Then, beautifully nestled in…

Hey, it ain’t easy being green… But somehow, both this lawn and Kermit manage to do it!
(You’re totally not crazy, by the way. I think it does, too!)
That’s two questions and the answer to both is “Yes!” 🙂
I think I know these buildings…Is this Forest Hills? If so I’ve lived close by my whole life and never gotten this unique perspective!
it’s not that easy having a tree growing out of your cheek
Yes Forest Hills at Queens Blvd and Yellowstone Blvd
It even has the seam on the top of his head! Too much detail for coincidence!
It’s not too surprising to find this greenspace at a development relatively close to the Kaufman Astoria Studios where Sesame Street is filmed.
What a coincidence! I wonder if the residents that overlook it think the same. Excellent perspective, by the way!
Fabulous high-rise shot Nick – from where did you take it??
That’s Parker Towers. While looking at the building, did you notice the end apartments are accessed via an exterior entrence on what appears at first glance to be terraces. The buildings were constructed this way to save on the cost of elevators and maximizing the floorplan.
In fact it IS fashioned after Kermit! The story goes that Jack Parker who built and owns this property did this for his grandson who absolutely loved Kermy.
