A Closer Look at the PS 110 Owls
A few weeks ago, I wrote about PS 110, an elementary school located just south of the Williamsburg Bridge… …whose roof is lined with a number of really great stone owls (a parliament of owls, to use the correct phrasing!). I notice the owls every time I cross the Williamsburg Bridge, and I mentioned in…
Treasures on the East 25th Street Courthouse
One of my favorite buildings in Manhattan is the marble courthouse on 25th & Madison, home to the Appellate Division of the NY State Supreme Court. It’s a charmingly compact building at only three stories high, completely dwarfed by the surrounding skyscrapers (I snagged this picture from Flickr user IneT, as the building was hidden…
The Prettiest Building In Times Square Has Been Saved
Last year in September, I wrote an open letter to the new owners of the property at 1552 Broadway in Times Square asking a simple request: that they save a Times Square treasure. Nearly 100 years before it became a decrepit, out-of-business TGIF, 1552 Broadway was the showroom for I. Miller shoes, famous for supplying…
The Old Operating Theatre on Columbus Ave
I was scouting around the West 50’s recently when I noticed a really interesting building on West 59th I’d never seen before, tucked away in the shadows of the bland modern high-rises surrounding it. The building looked to be in great shape despite its age, and two features in particular caught my eye… First, this…
This Is What The Top Of New York Looks Like
In case you’ve ever wondered what the top of New York looks like, here it is! Last weekend, some friends and I hiked the 7.4 mile trail up Mount Marcy. Located in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks, the summit of Mount Marcy is officially the highest point in New York state at 5,343…
The Coolest Elevator in New York
Last week, I was scouting office space in a building in Queens. My guide brought me to this totally unassuming elevator: Really, I have to show you this as I encountered it:

Hey, it ain’t easy being green… But somehow, both this lawn and Kermit manage to do it!
(You’re totally not crazy, by the way. I think it does, too!)
That’s two questions and the answer to both is “Yes!” 🙂
I think I know these buildings…Is this Forest Hills? If so I’ve lived close by my whole life and never gotten this unique perspective!
it’s not that easy having a tree growing out of your cheek
Yes Forest Hills at Queens Blvd and Yellowstone Blvd
It even has the seam on the top of his head! Too much detail for coincidence!
It’s not too surprising to find this greenspace at a development relatively close to the Kaufman Astoria Studios where Sesame Street is filmed.
What a coincidence! I wonder if the residents that overlook it think the same. Excellent perspective, by the way!
Fabulous high-rise shot Nick – from where did you take it??
That’s Parker Towers. While looking at the building, did you notice the end apartments are accessed via an exterior entrence on what appears at first glance to be terraces. The buildings were constructed this way to save on the cost of elevators and maximizing the floorplan.
In fact it IS fashioned after Kermit! The story goes that Jack Parker who built and owns this property did this for his grandson who absolutely loved Kermy.
