The Most Impressive-Looking Sex Shop in Manhattan
It’s one of those archetypal New York scenes: a squat, three-story building dwarfed on all sides by towering skyscrapers, the little building that could. Except, this little building happens to house a sex shop. Or at least, it did. I shot pictures of this beautiful art nouveau building at 38th Street & 8th Ave with…
Exploring the Secrets of the Astral Apartments
A year ago, I heard that plans were in the works to remake Rosemary’s Baby, and my reaction was exactly what you’re thinking now: NO. The film is a masterpiece, and to remake it would be nothing short of cinematic blasphemy. In the days that followed, however, I found myself mulling over the central question:…
There’s Something Wrong With This Staten Island Church
Last weekend, I was scouting some locations on Staten Island, and the last on my list was this church at the southern tip of the island. At first, everything about the 185-foot tall Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne seemed perfectly normal. But as I was taking some angle shots, something started to feel…off….
The Long Death of the Sad Little Diner On West Street
One of my favorite diners in New York is so small, you could literally blink and miss it while driving north on West Street. And it’s understandable – tucked in between two auto repair shops in the shadow of a large tree, it almost looks like it doesn’t want to be bothered with such trivialities…
The 150-Foot Hole in Park Avenue
“Hi scoutingny! I don’t know if this would interest to you, but it is definitely unique, and should experienced at night, because you can’t see it during the day.” “On the west side of the Park Avenue sidewalk, between 36th and 37th street there is a small construction crew. I don’t know what they are…
New York City’s Prettiest Subway Station Is In The Bronx
One of the things I love most about New York City’s prettiest subway station is the way it unexpectedly appears out of nowhere. As you’re heading east along 180th Street toward Morris Park Ave in the Bronx, look north… …and all of a sudden, you’ll see a red terra cotta-roofed tower rise into view just…

Hey, it ain’t easy being green… But somehow, both this lawn and Kermit manage to do it!
(You’re totally not crazy, by the way. I think it does, too!)
That’s two questions and the answer to both is “Yes!” 🙂
I think I know these buildings…Is this Forest Hills? If so I’ve lived close by my whole life and never gotten this unique perspective!
it’s not that easy having a tree growing out of your cheek
Yes Forest Hills at Queens Blvd and Yellowstone Blvd
It even has the seam on the top of his head! Too much detail for coincidence!
It’s not too surprising to find this greenspace at a development relatively close to the Kaufman Astoria Studios where Sesame Street is filmed.
What a coincidence! I wonder if the residents that overlook it think the same. Excellent perspective, by the way!
Fabulous high-rise shot Nick – from where did you take it??
That’s Parker Towers. While looking at the building, did you notice the end apartments are accessed via an exterior entrence on what appears at first glance to be terraces. The buildings were constructed this way to save on the cost of elevators and maximizing the floorplan.
In fact it IS fashioned after Kermit! The story goes that Jack Parker who built and owns this property did this for his grandson who absolutely loved Kermy.
