She Found A New Home!!

Let me speak on behalf of the little dog who was left to die in a snowstorm two nights ago:

THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

002
Me and Dog

My girlfriend and I just got back from dropping off our unexpected pal to her new home with a very warm and loving married couple, who I have no doubt will make amazing, responsible, and caring owners. You’ll just have to trust me when I say: this dog is going to have a great, great life. Her new owners have promised to send some pictures as soon as she gets acclimated, which I will post here.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to take her in! We literally had offers from across the globe – residents from as far as the UK, India, and Greece offered to pay the airfare and take her in. We had offers from people ready to drive up from Florida, Nebraska, Kentucky, Illinois and beyond, while others were ready to fly in from California, Texas, Louisiana…

Meanwhile, there was a huge outpouring of support from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut…pretty much everywhere, and I can’t say how much it warmed my heart. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to write back personally to many of you, but know that I read every single e-mail and am eternally grateful.

Please remember: while this dog has found a home, there are literally thousands in shelters that are in desperate need of a loving and caring home – and if you were ready to take this little girl, maybe you might think of taking a trip to your local shelter and adopting an animal that isn’t lucky enough to have a blog post? I promise, there are dogs out there with far, far more tragic stories than being chained to a bridge overnight in a snowstorm, and the vast majority will end up euthanized. They’d love you forever. Just a thought (this dog is set to be killed today if an owner isn’t found. You can also try Pet Finder or a site started by my friend, ExtendedPaws).

Finally, thank you to everyone who offered advice on what to do with the dog, and how to avoid kill shelters. A lot of you poured your hearts out in passionate email, and I definitely welled up way too many times while checking my inbox today. Hopefully, the 500+ comments will help others in the future who find themselves in my situation.

When I wrote my post last night, I really had little hope we’d find a home for her. Now, less than 24 hours later, she’s resting comfortably in a wonderful new home, and there’s no one to thank but you.

Last pic before we hopped in the car to take her to her new home:

PS – From reader Danny:

Hey man- just read your update on that awesome pup.  Your post gave me the strength to get another doggie.  time to move on and stop mourning and celebrate his memory.  thanks for the push 😉

Awesome.

  1. I am so very glad. Sweet puppy! And yes, pound animals need more consideration. My cat is a pound adoption and I couldn’t have a better pet if I’d planned it. Thanks for sending out the SOS on this pup and here’s hoping plenty more people get inspired to go to a pound for their next cat or dog as a result!

  2. I just clicked on the last page of comments on the previous post when this update came up! This is wonderful, wonderful news!
Is it the Bascoms so many others spoke so highly of? 🙂

I was amazed by the overwhelming support and interest that seemed to pour from every direction (I found out about the story from a post on a Facebook page dedicated to dogs,) and say what you will about New Yorkers, but most of us love dogs! Hopefully the great attention this story has received as well as the mention of some amazing no-kill shelters and local rescue organizations by commenters will help other abandoned pups find their forever homes.

Thank you, Scout! Please, update us on her story!

  3. I am so, so pleased to hear this. Pit Bulls are truly wonderful dogs and they don’t deserve the rep they have or the abuse/neglect they receive. Thank you, also, for guiding people who were willing to help her towards rescue. There are amazing organizations out there who pull Pit Bulls from kill shelters and evaluate them a place them in proper and loving homes. Check out Animal Farm Foundation, Out of the Pits, Pin Ups for Pit Bulls, Bruised Not Broken, and/or Animal Haven if you’re looking to be another lucky dog’s hero.

  4. Awesome story. You’re gonna love this dog. My girlfriend and I rescued a pit bull 2 years ago and she his is sweetest thing ever! She never really barks and is absolutely friendy to everyone. She has changed our lives and become a wonderful addition to our family.

  5. You’re awesome! And what a beautiful pup. Prayers for blessings on you, her and the couple that took her in – and that all the others out there needing homes and love get the chance.

  6. I am so happy that there is a great ending to this story!!! And you are so right…there are still so many animals out there in need of a home in worse circumstances. I know we can’t save them all, but we can try.

  7. what you and your friend did for this dog is wonderful.i wish there were more people like you i too found a german shepard last year he also was abonded and i gave to my friend who has a bug house with a yard as i live in a small apt in california and could not keep him but i do see him often….you and your friends have a one way first class ticket to heaven, god bless you all…..

  8. We have two beautiful labs we rescued a few years ago. All dogs need a chance. You and your friends were wonderful to help this beautiful dog. Good for you.

    Happy for the pup.

  9. Happy news, thank you for networking this sweet girl into a new home. Not every abandoned and/or shelter dog has such a person championing them. Nor does every ‘breeder’ care about what happens to their dogs.

  10. I could not go to sleep without checking on this little girl. When I saw that a home was found for her my eyes literally welled up. I am so grateful that she was rescued by someone with a huge heart. As a responsible dog owner, I can not imagine who could be so cruel & heartless and leave a pet to die. I know this is not an isolated incident and there are many other dogs that are in need of the same help. I wish people would think long and hard before they decided to get a pet. I have had dogs all my life and, believe me, my dog has a wonderful life! Having a pet is a huge responsibility but the most rewarding experience one can ever have. I’m so thankful that this beautiful angel has a warm place to sleep tonight.

  11. Great job. I volunteer at a shelter and we have about 60-70% pits at any time. Some of them are so sweet and deserve to go home, but it takes a very long time for them to get adopted out, if ever. You did such a great job getting this girl a home. Imagine if you featured a dog every day, what a difference you could make!

  12. well done.. 🙂

i think you should get a dog a week from the kill shelter as you found a home for this one so quickly! you help save 100’s every year!!! 🙂

  13. Bless you bless you bless you bless you! She’s beautiful and will be so grateful and loyal to the good folks who are adopting her.

Thank you to the Good Samaritans who rescued her from death out in the elements. My own treeing cur was found and rescued by similarly good people who simply couldn’t leave an abandoned and distressed animal to fend for itself. He had a mouthful of porcupine quills and was burrowed underneath a cabin, and the kind folk patiently spent two days luring him out with ham salad and vanilla wafers. They took him to the local shelter, where my path crossed with his and I brought him home. He’s not very bright but he tries hard and is very gentle and sweet, and he’s truly excellent at smelling things. Not so good at most anything else, to be honest, but he sure can smell.

For some PR, perhaps you should contact Rachael Ray’s show. She has a pit bull and is a big advocate, and might like the story of your bridge pup to promote adoptions. Worth a try!

  14. You guys rock!
Excellent advice to everyone that said they could save this one… go visit your local shelter, and remember to commit to them for the rest of their happy lives! 🙂

  15. This is a beautiful, encouraging ending to a touching story. Really well done, everyone! I’m also thankful that you gave energy to the tragic larger picture.. you took the exact words i was thinking: to help animals who aren’t fortunate enough to have a blog post. Let’s continue as a group of conscientious ones to shine the light on this heartbreaking issue of homeless animals, most of whom have the sweetest temperaments. Peace & Blessings to all here ~

  16. After the recent tragedy in Arizona I started to think people were just awful. All you hear about are the bad things all the time. But then I read these past two posts and all the comments and it really restores my faith in humanity. There are good people out there. This experience will stick with you the rest of your life. Good Job!!

  17. I have been seriously distraught over this since reading the article yesterday. My husband and I resuced a male pit bull mix 2 years ago, so we have soft spots in our hearts. We were going to look into taking this sweet girl, but I am SO SO happy she found a wonderful home. I teared up reading this, thank you so much for being kind enough to take her in. I wish someone knew the disgusting person that left her there and did the same to them. Bless you for what you did

  18. I’m a shelter mutt Mom, and this story brought sad and happy tears to my eyes. Way to pay it forward. It’s wonderful to read some good and heartwarming news for once. Great job, bravo.

    1. Well done, Scout. That little lady is lucky she had you and your friend in her corner. And congratulations to her new family–looks like you guys just got a great little dog.

  19. I’m so glad she has a home, Nick!!
FYI guys, please consider visiting and volunteering at animal shelters. It will be the best hours of your lives and they always need help!
Here’s one that I’m volunteering at in downtown Manhattan if you all are interested: http://www.animalhavenshelter.org

  20. So glad she found a great home! That other link kills me though. I really hope that she gets adopted :-/

My parents just rescued another pug right before xmas. He’s so great. If I can ever own a pet, I would only rescue from now on.

  21. wow, thats great, ive done a lot of dog rescue for this wonderful breed and its really hard to find them home. you are in a position
to really make a difference in a dog’s life as there are SO many
pits as beautiful as this who die unnecessarily. You should consider working with a pitbull rescue or local rescue and feature a dog on your site since its obvious you have influence. Thanks for helping this dog!

  22. Oh man, now I’m all teary-eyed. GREAT JOB!! From the bottom of my heart, and from my two rescued dogs: thank you. And big hugs to the couple who adopted her. What a wonderful outcome.

  23. This is absoulutely the best news of the day!!!! Congrats Little One for finding your forever home. Thank you Scout and your friend for not passing her up. You guys did a wonderful thing. I have never read your website, but you can be sure you found a new fan!!

  24. There is a special place in heaven for compassionate souls like yours… and it is filled with canine companions of all sorts, just waiting for your arrival – to spend an Elysian eternity, at play in the fields of the Lord…

Bless you, for your compassionate consideration of “all things canine”!

  25. If only there were more caring people such as yourself, the world would no doubt be a much better place. THANK YOU for coming to the aid of this poor unfortunate pup who was left abandoned by her cruel, heartless owner. You are her angel and I pray that her life going forward is what she deserves.

  26. Tears of joy this morning! Thank you for caring and taking her in. Thrilled that she has found a great new home!

  27. thank you so much for all you did for this wonderful dog. As the mom of a shelter pit bull I can speak first hand on how sweet and kind these dogs are. They have such a bad rep. Your story did bring tears to my eyes. Its good to know there are still decent people out there. When you hear these stories you lose faith in humanity. The dog is adorable and I’m sure she’ll make her new owners very happy!!

  28. This is fantastic; I just saw the story on my friend’s Buzz and my first thought was to drive up to NY from Baltimore (what can I say? I’m a sucker for puppy eyes) and find a new friend for my two year-old mutt-o-saurus. I’m SO glad that adorable angel has a new family to look after her.

  29. Is that the couple who lost their pit last year? I’m so glad she found a home. I used to volunteer at WorldHeart in California and it’s heartbreaking how many pits are abandoned. Without even looking, I found three myself in the last 24 hours that need homes here in NYC.

  30. This is great news!! Fostering a homeless dog is a great experience. I hope you do consider featuring other homeless pittys on your blog. I adore your blog since discovering it yesterday. You have an amazing job! Thank you for sharing 🙂

  31. She is one lucky dog. I am so happy she has found a good home with lots of love. Your a good man Scott, you and your friend that helped her find a good home. She is beautiful. I do believe there are more good people in this world than bad and it’s a shame that we have to share it with them.
This update really made my day……………………

  32. I’m so pleased! Went to bed worried about her last eve. I live in Bangalore (India). There are currently around 20 stray dogs outside my flat 🙁

  33. Many thanks to you and your friend – and the new family – for saving this sweetie. I also appreciate you pointing out that thousands of wonderful dogs die every week in shelters.

    Don’t shop – adopt!

  34. May you and your friends be blessed. Just one more great place to find dogs is Dogs Deserve Better, a nationwide anti-chaining organization. They work for better protective legislation and rescue, foster and place dogs. Most of the dogs are larger breeds and many, many of them are pit bulls. Sometimes they stay in foster for a long time. Most of them have come from pretty awful situations. DDB ioffers some great ways to volunteer or find your next best friend. Thank you so much for rescuing that beautiful, lovey girl!

  35. You did a really great thing for that sweet little dog. I love the way everyone pulled together to help her, but you really kicked it off.

I own a rescue dog and it’s one of the best things ever to know that you’ve changed a dog’s life. I can’t wait to see pics of your friend with her new family!

  36. You are awesome! Thank you so much for saving this dog and for making the point that there are so many other dogs who will never get this chance. If anyone is considering “buying” a new dog, please check with your local shelter or petfinder.com before going to a breeder. There are literally millions of amazing dogs and puppies waiting to be saved. Many are only given a two day window to be adopted before they are put to sleep.

  37. Hi,

Everhyone out there who wanted to adopt this girl..the ACC in NYC is in desperate straights. There are so many amazing pit bulls that will be dead today, tomorrow, and conintuing onward until someone goes there to pull one out. Please…save a life today! Remember..this is a life long committment!

I hope that the couple that adopted this sweet pooch, that I have named Brooklyn, temporarily, are knowledgable pit bull people or will reach out for help if a problem arises. They are very sensitive, very smart and loving dogs.

SAVE A PIT BULL’S LIFE TODAY!

  38. aaaawww I love a happy ending!
thank you for saving the dog, and for caring enough to find her a good home. Youre a good person, dammit! LOVE NYC for this kind of thing…

  39. Thank you for taking the time to help this dog find a new home. Thank you thank you thank you. (I’m just saying what she would say if she could talk!)

  40. Wow, you are a pretty awesome person!! Thanks for caring, really, it is amazing to see this amongst such a large community. Your efforts are inspiring and I was very happy to read the outcome of this story. 🙂

  41. EEK! i am so, so, so happy!! i have been holding her in my heart, knowing how hard it is for pits to find homes. thank you for loving her and reaching out. this is a great story … now onto the millions others. <3

  42. So glad she found a home…what fabulous news! You guys are so awesome for helping her. Great mention about the thousand’s of shelter animals out there waiting for a new home. I’m sure a few more have been saved thanks to your post.

  43. That is wonderful news! My dog is a rescue and she was the best addition to my life. They make the best dogs. Do not buy a puppy mill puppy. The people that sell them are cruel to the animals. There are so many in shelters that need homes. I don’t don;t think they ever forget that you saved them from the shelter.
So glad to hear a good deed was rewarded. I hope everyone involved has much success and happiness.

  44. Pitbulls are amazing dogs and in need of loving families to adopt them from the shelters. My husband and I adopted a 2 1/2 year old rescue pit bull from a kill shelter 4 months ago and Rosie has been nothing but an incredibly loving and loyal dog for our family. I too grew up with labs and was initially hesitant to adopt a breed that had such negative stigma associated with it. But all of our research we did coupled with our time with Rosie quickly helped us realize how misunderstood and mischaracterized pit bulls are. We have a 17th month old son. Rosie could not be more incredible with him. She’s patient, calm and gentle and happily puts up with the occasional tail pull. Pit bulls get a bad rap from the small subculture that abuses them and uses them for fighting. Pits by breed are one of the most human-loving dog breeds and actually (what most people don’t know) score higher on temperment tests than labs, goldens and many of the other “family” dogs. In addition, they are responsible for far fewer human bites than most other popular breeds. It’s just that the media loves to showcase the unfortunate bit bull incidents and ignore the others. So please, consider adopting a bit bull. All they really want to do in life is flop on their back and have their belly rubbed.

  45. You are wonderful! I was so worried about her – i am so glad she found a great home. I also loved your message about other shelter dogs needing homes, so true! Sending love from MA!

  46. I’ve followed your blog and loved your site for such a long time but these posts about this beautiful dog have most definitely been the most touching (not that your other stuff isn’t great – it is, but I have a soft spot for unwanted dogs, having rescued one myself). You did a great thing using your site to reach out for help. And I’m so glad that through your initiative you were able to find this sweetheart a new home. It’s good to see that a dog who’d had such a dark life has now found such great luck and a fabulous new home. =) *hug*

  47. I’m so happy for the puppy, and the owners as well! Looks like the home will be filled with alot of love!!!

To the previous owners….I pray that karma meets you very soon, I hope someone ties you to a bridge in the middle of a snowstorm in the freezing cold. And pray that it is not me that does it.

  48. Run, don’t walk to your nearest shelter + scoop up a pit bull right now!! For all that offered to house this beautiful pup, there are currently over 200 pit bulls in the Philadelphia City Shelter. Ironically, we are the city that’s major sports franchise employs the most notorious dog fighter in history. Take a chance + see how amazing, intelligent + loyal these beautiful dogs can be. Save a pit bull’s life today, without you – they’ll never see the light of day.

  49. Blessings to you for rescuing this beautful dog. The response to this is amazing. I am so glad she found a wonderful home.

  50. Thanks Scout to you and your girlfriend. In a week when the world has seen what hate for no reason or by assumption (like our friends the pitbulls) achieves, you are more than example of the good in people. You went above and beyond for that dog and gave all of us around the world a chance to reflect back in your honor. As my way of saying thank you, I would like to offer a match of $500.00 toward your film. If everyone who commented on your post gives $5, coupled with my $500.00, you will be close to your goal. I have the utmost confidence that the amazing community that rallied around this dog will be more than happy to rally once more around you. Best, Julie

  51. YEAH!!! Her new owners will have a great and faithful friend for life, I am donating towards your film, as your good deed certainly should be rewarded.
What a wonderful story to begin 2011.

  52. Good idea, Julie. I will donate $5.00 now, to pay it forward. I had a few people rally to assist me when I too found a pit tied up just over a year ago. Thanks for being you, Scout!

  53. yay! from a cat lover.

i’m a bit scared of dogs, but they deserve better then this girl has received in the past– we all deserve the good treatment that you’ve given her, and that her new people are going to give her!!!

i’m sitting here with my two aging kitties, one i adopted as an adult when her mom moved to london and had to give her up, the other i adopted as a kitten from a shelter– he had been a feral guy rescued and socialized by the local group fix our ferals!

they are both so sweet and loving– my girl is a bit feeble at 14, she had a stroke two years ago and is blind now and a bit slower then she used to be but still loves laps, wet food and sleeping under the covers– and the younger ex-feral guy is astonishingly social and affectionate, follows me around the house and is pretty much my constant companion.

for those who can’t take in a dog– be aware that pounds and shelters are also full of loving sweety cats who are hoping to be taken in by good people. black cats, older cats and formerly ferals have a lot of trouble finding homes and will reward all your affection tenfold! having adopted all three, i would never get a cat from a breeder.

(athough if you are currently a dog person, be aware that cats socialize differently– they are just as loving and affectionate but they are shyer, and you will need tips from a cat person on how to interact, cat manners are different from dog manners. 🙂 )

    xoxo

  54. Scout. Thank you for giving this sweet girl a second chance. After reading the story yesterday, tears in my eyes while I tried to focus on my computer screen at work, I couldn’t stop thinking about that dog. I even had nightmares last night about trying to rescue puppies from the Williamsburg Bridge and not being able to carry enough of them. When I read your follow up that she has found a happy home, again my eyes filled with tears, but this time they are happy tears. Thank you again for your time and efforts, you saved a very special life. Cheers, Ali.

  55. This fills my heart so much to know she has successfully found a home.

But you are beyond correct when you state that there literally thousands of unwanted pets who may have been through a hell of a lot worse looking for their forever homes. I encourage every one of those who were willing to take this poor girl in to do what Scounting NY has suggested and check out a local shelter to take one of these loving creatures home. Or if you can’t then donate – money, time, supplies; they need it all!

  56. This just made my day. It breaks my heart to see all the pics everyday of the dogs that need homes. They are so frightened and confused. I am overjoyed that this girl found a loving home. Thank you just doesn’t cover it. You are so wonderful.

  57. Nick!
We are blown away by the story of the “Doggie Left Out in the SNOW”…..We think you should write a book and share her story with the rest of the world…..or make a movie about her….it would be a huge hit, no doubt!

  58. Thank you for what you did! and also for mentioning the countless other animals who need help as well!! cheers to Scout!

  59. Thank you so much for all you did and I am so very happy this sweet baby will now have a loving home. It is people like you who make a difference and give our furry babies hope at a better life. I can’t thank you enough for what you have done.

  60. God Bless You!! You have saved one of gods beautiful angels and you will be blessed with so much more. I’m eternally grateful for what you did for this little helpless baby and from the picture so is she. I broke down while reading your first post and sent the information to eveyone on my contact list and on facebook trying to help her, but today I cried tears of joy after reading your update…Thank you Scout.

  61. Thank you, thank you, thank you. As an animal lover, It really warms my heart and soul to know that this little girl has a loving forever home and that there are kind people like you out there in the world. You are an angel!!! Such a good guy that I think EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN INTERESTED IN THIS PUP AND HER STORY SHOULD THANK SCUOT BY DONATING $5 TO HIS FILM. This can be our way to pay it forward. My best to you in your future endeavors.
    Toni

  62. Super cool that you guys found her a home…Even cooler is the amount of people that were willing to take her in.

  63. Yay!!!!!!! Thank you so much for the update and thank you for finding her a good home. Amazing the love one animal can manifest amongst strangers 🙂

  64. The anger I have for the person who left this pooch on the bridge is matched – no, surpassed – by my happiness at seeing the outpouring of goodness that has been shown.

  65. Thank you soo much for rescuing her and help finding her a home!! My family and I would have taken her in. I am jealous of the couple that gets her. She is so beautiful and looks so friendly. I wish nothing but horrible things for the people who chained her to the bridge. Hope she has a long and happy life!

  66. Thank you. We have 6 cats, 1 dog and 3 birds.. all rescues. Just.. thanks. I’m glad the masses showed up and made sure this beautiful girl found a good home.

  67. Oh, and take Toni’s advice – MAKE A DONATION TO HELP MAKE SCOUT’S DREAM COME TRUE – It’s an easy way to thank him for what he’s done!!!

Wonderful story – I heard about it on the NYC tv news today. I hope this shines a light on your work (besides being Doggie’s Super Hero) and helps you in your endeavor to make your own film. I’ll be watching! Nicely done, Scout and yes, your girlfriend is lucky as well. lol

  68. Thanks for renewing my faith in people, Scout. And thanks to all of you who replied that they would take the dog. This past week has been a tough one, and I’m glad to see that are are more of us who show love than those who show hate.

  69. I read the story not realizing she was adopted until I scrolled back to the top to see if it was from a blog and realized she has been adopted. Beautiful ending to a sad story. Made me very happy.

  70. Whoo-hoo! I’m so happy you found a new home for her. She sees wonderful, Nick.
So, are her new owners naming her “Scout”?

  71. Thank you for mentioning that if so many were willing to adopt this dog, there are so many others out there in shelters and rescues that need homes too. Too often people don’t realize that. Thank you for supporting adoption and rescuing!

  72. Thank you SO much for being the wonderful person that you are to
have a big heart full of love & kindness to help this beautiful sweet dog. God Bless You ! Love, hugs and big kisses for the poochie !

  73. Great story! I adopted a 2.5 year old pit bull myself a few months ago. She has been nothing short of FANTASTIC. Loyal, fun, gentle, smart… a dream dog. There were tons more at the shelter on 110th St and 2nd Ave. Tons of awesome cute dogs. Go take a trip there… you save awesome dogs life and get it for FREE!

    http://www.yelp.com/biz/animal-care-and-control-new-york

People that leave 2 stars are ass holes. The place is run by VOLUNTEERS, and they do a damn good job if you ask me.

  74. you are so awesome for everything you did to help that sweet girl! thank you for all you did, and for reminding us all of the good that is out there in the world.
