A Ghost House In Queens
This property was demolished in April 2013. Growing up in Massachusetts, there was never any shortage of ghost houses: crumbling, hundred year-old derelicts that would fuel many a sleepover double-dog-dare (“I double dog dare to you to knock on the door!” “No way!” “Wuss!”). One of my favorites was just a few blocks from my…
Gone Forever: The Ghost House In Queens
In June ’11, I wrote about one of my favorite “haunted house”-like properties in New York City, a dilapidated yet once beautiful Victorian located at 3103 37th Avenue in Queens: Gone forever: Several readers sent me this article in the Queens Gazette about its recent demise. Can’t wait to see what goes up in its…
Visiting The Apocalypse (in Queens)
A week ago, I was out taking pictures of Citi Field… …and for some reason, I found myself paying attention to the long line of car repair places across the street. I’ve always been peripherally aware that the neighborhood has a high concentration of autobody shops along the main drags, but it never occurred to…
The Queens Movie Theater You Will Not Believe – Scouting The Valencia Movie Palace
Last week, I was scouting on Jamaica Ave when I noticed a movie-theater-turned-church up the block. This is pretty common in New York, where are a LOT of once great theaters have been gutted and repurposed, most often into churches, pharmacies and gyms. I’ve stopped in quite a few hoping to find the rare gem…
The Prettiest Cab Stand In New York
I swear I’ve gone by the Yakuel cab stand on 12th Street and the Queensboro Bridge a million times without ever looking inside. Other than the bright new paint job and the nice potted plants, it really doesn’t seem any different from most cab stands in this area of Queens. Except, the plants outside… …are…
A Tree Grows in Queens (Right Through An Auto Body Shop!)
I was driving down 27th Ave in Astoria the other day when a rather large tree in front of an auto body shop caught my eye. Nothing too special about a random tree…but something didn’t seem right… …And then I realized: was that tree growing through the auto body shop??

Thanks for the pic Scout. I used to walk with my dog, Phineas, here all the time when I lived in Forest Hills. Queens has some amazing places for those willing to do some exploring.
Scout, very, very pretty and just love the way you framed the towers in there.
You need to make a Kickstarter project for this movie. I bet it would get funded in like an hour.
If you like this, cross the Hudson to New Jersey and check out Newark’s gorgeous Branch Brook Park, with the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in America (many more than Washington, DC). The park’ southern end is adjacent to the magnificent Newark Basilica (I forget which saint it’s named for); we go to europe to see buildings like this!
Thanks for all the effort you obviously put into this. I just discovered Scouting NY and it’s great!
