Half A Brownstone on West 58th Street
I was walking down West 58th Street when I saw it: exactly half a brownstone (12.5 feet), gloriously smooshed between two much larger apartment buildings: I was immediately reminded of one of my favorite buildings in midtown, the very similar 19 West 46th Street, also measuring 12.5 feet. A number of readers have written me…
The 40th St Philosophers
One of my favorites bits in Times Square can be found on West 40th Street between Broadway and 6th. It’s two blocks from the main Times Square action, and you can feel the frantic energy vanish as soon as you turn onto the street. If you look closely at the building to the left, you’ll…
The Hidden Cemetery on Second Avenue
I must have walked past the entrance to Marble Cemetery on Second Ave (btw. 2nd & 3rd Sts.) countless times before I first noticed its existence (and I’m guessing I’m not the only one). Sandwiched between two buildings is this iron gate (technically 41 1/2 Second Ave), which is locked 99% of the year. Even…
Chelsea Birds Are Watching You
Wanted to share some really neat details I noticed while scouting in Chelsea the other day. This building, at the corner of 23rd & Ninth, is known as London Terrace Gardens and actually stretches all the way to 10th Ave. When it was built in 1931, it was considered the largest apartment building in the…
This Fish Factory Sign Looks Familiar…
OK, is it just me, or does this sign for Marshall’s Greenpoint Fish Factory… …look a hell of a lot like the logo for Marshall’s the discount clothing chain? Just something I wonder about every time I get on the BQE from Greenpoint. -SCOUT
Owls With Glowing Eyes in Herald Square
I took this picture of Herald Square (6th Ave btw. 34th & 35th) this morning at about 6:45. A second later, I took the following picture. See if you can pick out the difference. Hint: the change is only a few pixels in size. If you noticed it, no, you’re not going crazy. Let’s get…

no trump mortuary?
Oh, but just think about how much branding work went into each treatment of the TRUMP name!
How about the beginning of an Eddie Murphy film, that pretty bad too.
He won’t be trumped!
If you go to Lasker Skating Rink (and I imagine the other Trump rinks too) you can pay way too much for a bottle of Trump Water. His face is on the label too!
As of today (5/25/10), his face is on Snapple bottles. Snapple is across the street from my office in the Flatiron Building, giving away bottles of a new iced tea that was created by one of the contestants on Celebrity Apprentice. I was going to pass it by, but my wife pointed out that there’s not much free in this city, and I should grab one while they were available.
Great blog, BTW!
I can’t help but think of his heinous hair-piece when I see those curly tops to the “T’s”…
Would this also serve as a Trump Polling location?
