Century-Old Steampunk Hiding In A Hospital Basement
Last week, I was scouting a hospital basement for interesting spaces when I happened to notice something lurking in one corner… …this enormous iron wheel-shaped machine: As it turns out, this was part of the original steam generator system that powered the hospital in the early 1900s (now long since out of use). Made by…
The Creepy Book-Reading Gargoyle at West 181st Street
I was waiting at a light yesterday at the corner of 181st and Fort Washington Ave, when I happened to look up at the building on the corner… …and noticed a line of human gargoyles perched near the top. But one in particular quickly caught my eye… A very creepy book-reading gargoyle.
Want To Take A Trip To 1940s New York? Step Into Mishkin’s Drug Store
UPDATE: This is now gone. Last week, I was scouting around 145th Street at night, which gave me the perfect opportunity to shoot one of my favorite neon signs in all its glory: Mishkin’s Drugs. I love this sign. Part of it is its simplicity and compact dimensions; part of it is the perfect color…
The 40th St Philosophers
One of my favorites bits in Times Square can be found on West 40th Street between Broadway and 6th. It’s two blocks from the main Times Square action, and you can feel the frantic energy vanish as soon as you turn onto the street. If you look closely at the building to the left, you’ll…
What Happened To This Williamsburg Cemetery?
The two square blocks bordered by Union and Lorimer Aves. and Devoe and Powers Sts. in Williamsburg are as pleasant a place as any to live in Brooklyn. The streets are tree-lined and relatively quiet, yet only a short distance from everything Williamsburg has to offer. But the area wasn’t always residential. I was looking…

Standing outside the Brooklyn Army Terminal’s “Building B,” you might assume it to be just another of the many warehouses scattered throughout the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. But Building B has a secret…

Since I view the site on Google Reader, I can see posts even after you deleted them. So, my answer to the A-Lister hotel is the Trump International. Was I right?
Yeah, Trump would have been my guess too. Incidently, the tall white hotel tower on opposite side of the park is The Pierre. It’s former ballroom is now a penthouse for sale. Might be interesting to do a piece on that, as it is supposed to be quite something.
Mandarin Oriental at Columbus Circle?
The Mayflower? Oh wait, that’s not exactly A-list…but I did stay there for a movie job in early 2001 so I remember that view.
The Ritz-Carlton
This is just a shot in the dark, but is it John Lennon’s room? It would be appropriate….
The Plaza.
Since the Post caption is “A view from an A-Lister’s hotel room”; I would say you were at the Carlyle
It is from Columbus Circle — which looks to be Mandarin Oriental – in the Time Warner Center.
The Mayflower hotel has been gone for years – it’s now 15 CPW, which is has some of the most expensive real estate in NYC – that and TWC. I love – and live on the upper west side. This is my hood.
since my DH built the darn TWC, I’m guessing from the angle this is Trump Intl.. a tad north of it.
Essex?
בתי מלון, אין על מי לסמוך חייב לבדוק מלונות לעוף מפה !!
I was going to say 15 Central Park West. Does that have a hotel though? I don’t think so.
