Back In Time In Midwood
Nothing is better than driving through a neighborhood I’ve never been to and stumbling on something like this: You can find this amazing art-moderne building at the corner of Beverley Rd and Bedford Ave, and when I say Bedford Ave, I don’t mean a stretch in Williamsburg/Greenpoint, or Bed-Stuy. Some of you might be surprised…
Halloween in NY: Bleecker Street
Halloween is the only time of the year that I actually pay attention to store window displays, and I’m always impressed by the offerings on Bleecker Street in the West Village. I took a bike ride down Bleecker today to take some pictures (I’m convinced there’s some sort of secret neighborhood association that spreads extra…
Elephants on East 10th Street
This building, 9 East 10th Street (once the home of author Dawn Powell), features a really, really neat building number sign. It’s beautifully ornate, especially on this otherwise unremarkable building. I love the African theme, sort of feels like it should be on the outside of a safari club (note: commenters are saying this is…
The Singing Statues at St. John The Divine
In the south-western corner on the St John The Divine property is Synod Hall, a large indoor space available for functions (movies often rent it for catering and extras holding purposes when shooting in the area). I noticed something on my last job there – the statues in the arch above the front doors can…
A Single Picture Of Every Stop Along New York City’s Longest Subway Line
Last week, in the midst of packing for a pretty big move, I decided to take a break and do something I’ve always wanted to: ride the A train from start to finish. The A train is New York City’s longest subway line. For just the standard fare of $2.75, it will take you more…
Staying Together on Division
Sorry in advance for the cuteness factor, but I couldn’t resist taking pictures of these two stray cats down on Division Ave & Kent Ave in Williamsburg. Everywhere they went, they walked side by side, practically pressed up against each other. I wish I had a few more to show how unwilling to separate they…

WHY do they put this fabulous stuff so high only the pidgeons can see them…and you. Are they supposed to be secret…like where’s Waldo or some kind of code?
Scout, I love your work, don’t stop. I follow your blog daily! I thought I was the only one who stopped and took notice of architectural details … my wife teases me. Anyway, I think these flourishes are signs of craftsman’s pride … these gleaming glass-curtain buildings that are being thrown up now have none of these details … they are homogenized and boring.
It would be interesting to know when this was built. There was something of an Egyptian Revival after Howard Carter discovered King Tut’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922.
More on the Egyptian theme: have you seen the apartment building on the north side of West 70th St. bet. Broadway & Columbus? The name escapes me at the moment.
Love your blog.
I would love to know the address of this building if you have it.
Thanks 🙂
Great history,
