Found!! A New Best Friend For The Dog That Survived The NYC Snow Storm

SHE FOUND A NEW HOME!! CLICK HERE!!

This morning, as a buddy of mine drove to work via the Williamsburg Bridge, he noticed something: a small gray dog chained to the pedestrian walkway, shivering, completely drenched and half-frozen. As you probably heard, New York had a very big snow storm last night; we’re almost certain her owners left her out in it overnight to die.

001

That same dog is now sleeping comfortably at my feet, well-fed, fully-bathed, and having been given a clean bill of health by the local vet.

005

My friend brought the dog to his office and spent the entire day making calls, not realizing how hard it is to find a home for a pit bull. Something like 1 in 800 rescued pit bulls find homes, and as far as I can tell, no “no-kill” shelter will accept them. I offered to take the dog for the night, since I live closer to my buddy’s office than he does.

002

Since she showed up to my apartment, she’s been a doll. Hasn’t barked once – in fact, I think the only sound I’ve heard was when she began whimpering when I left the room.

She’s young – the vet estimated her to be 1-2 years old. She knows how to sit, seems to understand stay, and is one of those great dogs that stays very close to your side, leash or no leash. Also, she has a gorgeous gray coat, and as you can see, neither her ears nor tail are clipped. Finally, she’s been exceptionally friendly and playful, both with my roommates and all 30+ co-workers at my friend’s office.

003

My friend’s going to take her back tomorrow and try to find her a home, but prospects are not looking hopeful, and eventually he’ll have to take her to a kill shelter. He asked if I’d put up some pictures on my site to see if anyone out there might be interested in taking her in, or perhaps has some advice on what to do with her (we e-mailed a few pit bull rescue groups, but they had little to offer).

Don’t get me wrong – I am fully aware that she’s a pit bull, and that there’s a rep that goes along with the breed. But this one has been well-behaved and quiet, and I just interrupted her sleep to scratch her belly and all she did was kick her foot and wag her tail happily.

She seems like a beautiful pet for the right person, and if you’re at all interested, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at nycscout@gmail.com. I’ll put you in touch with the person who found her and of course, you would certainly be able to meet her before committing to anything.

006

Anyway, I just finished eating a burrito and some nachos, and I noticed the dog watching me, looking for a treat. At first, my “master” instinct kicked in and I told her to go lay down, which she did. But then I broke down and gave her some left-overs.

After all, she just spent the night in one of the worst snow storms of the year, and probably only has a short time left anyway – why not spoil her a little before she’s gone?

-SCOUT

PS – If you can do anything to help spread the word via Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr, both me and my new lady friend would be forever in your debt.

  1. my dream dog no joke!! if i lived in the states and weren’t in college at the moment i totally would! Hope she finds a good home!

  2. Please get in touch wit Pet’s Alive. I would love to take her but I live in Ohio. I have a female pitbull and there is not enough money in the world for anyone to get her from me. I love her like my child.

  3. She is an identical TWIN to our puppy at home and we’d love to have her if she still needs a home!!

  4. Did you report the address of where you found her to the authorities? if not, send it to me. I will. She is gorgeous!!!!!

  5. She is an identical twin to my dog as well…this dog deserves a great home and I hope she finds it!

To all that adopt and rescue and care for the general well-being of strays…bless you all! Dogs have feelings just like humans do and can give gratitude…this pup will give years of it!

  6. I was wondering if poster of her could be put up of her in the surrounding area to see if her pictures jogs anyone’s memory as to her owners, so maybe we can catch the person that did this!!! Just a thought, and I hope she’s found a great home!! If not, me and my fiance would love her!

  7. I got my little sweetheart pit from a rescue/fostering non-profit group in NY. I lived in WA. Heights at the time. It looks like you have plenty of people/offers. I just wanted to thank you and your friend for taking her in, obviously many other people probably passed her by, while she was tied-up there. My pit is 9 years old now, we live on 5 acres just outside Seattle, she looks after and protects our two cats, (such a mean breed, ha!). Pit’s have gotten such a bad rap in the media..they’re so loyal, such little clowns, and are so smart/trainable; which is why they’re often targeted by cruel people to fight/be aggressive. What has happend to this breed/and to many other living creatures, by humans, is just so sad and inhumane. However, congrats on doing the right/good thing. 🙂 Another has been saved, and is going on to a loving home!

  8. What a beautiful dog. I’d love to tie up the owners to a post outside in sub-freezing temps in a foot of snow. Please be careful who you adopt her to. Maybe a local rescue would be willing to do a home check and I agree with earlier posters who recommended an adoption fee. There are some unsavory people out there that would take a dog like this and either fight her or use her as a bait dog if she has a more submissive personality.

  9. Please make sure that you check out the residence of the lucky person that gets this beautiful girl. You do not want her to wind up in the same situation she was found or even worse abused or used for dog fighting.

  10. I just sent this post to a dog rescue place in NY to see if they can take her in instead of her going to a kill shelter. There is no need for her to be euthanized when there are rescue groups out there. Please consider a rescue group before surrendering her to a kill shelter.

  11. I know a man in north Jersey, Jeff Coltenback who runs a rescue called Pitty Rescue. http://www.pittyrescue.com/

He specializes in Pitt Bull cases, and he should be a good lead for you. I sent him a private email, with a link to your blog, but I thought it might not hurt to comment here.

  12. So happy to see your update that this beautiful dog has options of going to a good home. Please be very choosy and check the adoptive family thoroughly. God forbid she should go to some heartless person who would use the dog for fighting. Thank you so much for being such a great human being and caring enough to put the story out there so the dog can have a chance with a truly loving family. Will look forward to further updates and hearing that she has found a really wonderful family that will shower her with the love she deserves.

  13. Please be very careful when placing pit bulls over the internet or to people who you do not know. A reputable rescue requires a home visit.

Too many dog fighters out there are looking for bait dogs. Bait dogs are gentle submissive pit bulls that thefighters use to train their dogs to be killers.

I am at capacity right now, but if you need help vetting a potential home, please let me know as I would be more than willing to help you through the placement process. Meanwhile I will reach out to rescues I know that will take pit bulls when they have room. You can reach me at: centcom@war-online.org

  14. is she good with other dogs?
I am looking to adopt and I have a nice garden and doggie door in my house in venice, CA.
    Let me know –

  15. A big hug and many thanks to you and your buddy for what you’re doing for this dog. Pit Bulls are undeserving of the reputation they have—most are very sweet, intelligent dogs.

Lots happy thoughts to you all!

  16. My prayers go with you and your new found friend to her new home– please be careful placing this beautiful pit bull. It seems easy enough to say “Can you give her a good home?” BUT not every one tells the truth or does what they say. It will only take one show of bad behavior and the new owner will drop her off at a shelter.

PLEASE – the best home is one that has EXPERIENCE WITH PIT BULLS, someone who knows the breed will know the difference between aggressive bad behavior and aggressive controlled protective behavior. Too often an unexperienced owner will bring a pit to rescue because of a mean growl, or excessive pulling or they ran after the meter reader.

I own a pit bull same age and gender and she’s my best friend, if you can’t find a reputable home, email me I’ll come get her….I’m in Minnesota but a gem like the one you found is hard to find.

  17. You have gotten such great advice from so many 🙂

As a bully breed owner and advocate, I agree:
    – please utilize a Rescue to vet out potential adopters; there are far too many people looking to breed or fight dogs
    – please place the dog with a pit bull experienced home…and preferably a home without another pit bull.

Best of luck – please keep us posted!

  18. Have you tried the Little Shelter in Huntington? They are a pretty fabulous organization. If you need a ride there with her, I’ll volunteer to drive her out (provided they agree to take her in advance).

  19. I have read over a lot of the responses to your fabulous rescue. Be careful when you rehome the dog. Pit Bulls do have a bad rap and yet are truly wonderful dogs. You will not know her true personality for a couple of months. But I would not send a dog out to North Shore! The are no-kill, but from what I have heard they do not have enough volunteers and the animals are there forever.
Guess there are two types of people in this world…the ones that truly love and care for their animals and then the ones that do not care and think nothing of where they leave them, how they treat them etc. Look at Vick.
Glad you took her in and you will feel all of the cuddles from her saying “Thank you” as all animals are so aware of the people that do rescue them.
    The previous owners are disgusting.

  20. Please make sure you email him at nycscout@gmail.com if you are really interested in this pup. He may not see your comments. Also please check out Urgent Part 2 on facebook as thre are so many other pit and pit mixes who are put down everyday in the NYC shelters that can use saving!! 🙂

  21. Thank you for the wonderful update! I am so relieved to know that she will not be going to a shelter… PLEASE check the home out thoroughly and vet references if they have other pets… just like everyone has said you need to be careful of who ends up with her! She is just precious! Good luck and thank you for saving her!

  22. Thank you for saving that gorgeous girl. Hopefully now you can count yourself among those of us lucky to know the true nature of this amazing, misrepresented breed.

  23. Hi – I can’t adopt her because I already have one dog in Brooklyn apt (only allowed one), BUT if you get to the point where you need a foster home for a few nights please let me know. I would be happy to foster her for a few days/nights if you are in a bind. Definitely do not want her going to the shelter because that is basically a death sentence for pit bulls (I got my beagle at the city pound and saw many pit bulls that would probably never get adopted). So contact me if you need a foster home for a few days in Brooklyn. freddiebean@yahoo.com

  24. Is it possible the owners didn’t abandon this beautiful dog? Perhaps it was snatched and then left? Or the dog walker got mugged? I think it would be good to contact the local shelters to see if anyone is looking for this dog. It’s a great looking pup & seems that someone somewhere gave it some love.
Thanks for taking the time out to rescue this cutie. THANK YOU!!!

  25. Hey,
I live in Astoria, NY, with a big ass yard (and a very friendly pit-bull). My roommates and I are more than willing to foster this sweet girl until she finds a forever home!
Good luck on your search and let us know if we can help!

  26. I’ve never been into dogs (i was bitten by one as a child) but he is sooo cute..i think he is breaking me into a dog lover just looking at his pics. I really hope he finds a good home.

  27. Hi! Thank you for helping to save this beautiful girl. Our rescue group (Pet Rescue of Mercer) is willing to care for this pretty girl until we can find her a wonderful forever home if she is good with other dogs. We are a no kill rescue group. We rescue all breeds of dogs. However, due to the overwhelming need we tend to get pitties the most. I know you have received lots of inquiries/interest from people wanting to adopt her. Please be careful when making your decision so that she finds a great home and can lead the healthy, happy and long life that she is so deserving of.

  28. HOORAY FOR YOU AND FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL GREY GIRL!!

Just a follow-up to the email messages I sent you. I’m sure you have been completely deluged with comments, emails, etc. You have done a great thing by helping this dog. The world should have more people like you (and your friend who picked her up off the street) in it.

    Cheers.

    ~Megan

  29. I read your story about this beautiful dog you found. Please, please do not send it to a kill shelter. There is a facility in Middletown NY called Pets Alive (petsalive.com). They rehabilitate dogs and have a no kill policy. They will keep the animal for its entire life if they have to. Please call them at (845) 386-9738 and ask to speak to Trudy. They save dogs from high kill shelters in the south as well as in Puerto Rico at a place called Dead Dog Beach. They are an absolutely wonderful organization. I am sure this dog is adoptable from what you have described.

  30. Oh my God can’t you keep her? I wish I could. I will pray for her even though it is obvious she has an angel who has been looking over her!
It will be just fine 🙂

  31. Poor girl! Thank you for taking her in and for working so hard to find a good home for her. She’s a lucky girl. Keep us updated!!

  32. Hey if you still have the dog my aunt in new york just had to give the dog she had back to the owner after having the dog for several years. She cried , she has ms and is alone when here caregiver goes to work in the evening. I think this would be a great relationship for the both of them. She is a wonderful lady she took me in when i had no place to go. i love her dearly and would love to see here happy again

  33. Its amazing that so many people have offered a home and help to her. It makes me feel somewhat better after this piece of garbage did this to her. I HOPE WHOEVER YOU ARE YOU ARE READING THIS. you are a LOWLIFE SCUMBAG HUMANBEING AND I HOPE TO GOD KARMA COMES BACK AND BITES YOU IN THE ASS. TO DO THIS TO A LIVING CREATURE THAT PROBABLY LOVED YOU AND OBEYED YOU. I HOPE YOU GET HIT BY A BUS!!!!!!!!

  34. This pup looks beautiful, sweet, and trusting (and, a tad worried) ! You sound like a very caring person who will do a good background check on potential owners before giving her away.

(A detail I noticed from the photos: Please loosen her collar! 😉 Looks very tight on her…)

  35. That is one beautiful girl. Be very careful to investigate the background of anyone you consider placing her with to be sure they aren’t the type to harm her in dog fights or abuse her in any way. I would take her in a heartbeat if I didn’t already have two dogs.

  36. I emailed regarding adopting her; however I am happy to to see so many other interested willing people as well. I wanted to let everyone know (since there is only one dog up for adoption) that another great place to check out pitbull rescues is http://www.animalfarmfoundation.org … they are a no kill pitbull only rescue in upstate new York! You can also check them out on facebook.

  37. The temperament of this dog as described here is actually the norm. Nice to see Scout is learning firsthand.

  38. I have a housekeeping business and one of my clients just adopted a pitbull. I will admit I was weary about keeping them as clients. Before going to the house to meet with “Maxi”, (just me and my assistant – the homeowner was at work) I stopped at McDonalds and picked up an order of fries for him. Needless to say, Maxi and I are now best of friends. I no longer bring fries but he is just as happy to see me just for some playtime. He is a beautiful tan and white, solid muscle, bundle of love. He never leaves my side as I go about my duties always looking for a wink and a “goooood boy”! He’s a lover!

  39. If I didn’t already have three at home (2 pits and a beagle) I would drive to NYC and bring her home with me. She’s the spit image of my boy Indy. I hope she finds a good home!

  40. Try Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Kensington (Brooklyn). They are very caring and definitely take pits. They work with a vet who will check the dog out and make sure he’s ready for adoption and will rehabilitate if necessary.

  41. I adopted the most loving beautiful Rottweiler from a non profit group in the New York City area called Waggin’ Train. They often have pit bulls , shepherd and rotty’s as well as mixes of those breeds.Nanette who is one of the main people that run the organization is very helpful. She wrote me everyday for a few days to make sure i was o.k. with my new friend and vice versa. If you are interested in adopting a great dog from great people here is the web site.

  42. I have a pitbull. A wonderful, loving boy who I acquired in a similar manner. A good Samaritan found him in a park when she witnessed him being kicked out of a pick-up truck on a very cold, January day and took him home. She worked and went to grad school and already had an elderly dog, and put out an APB at my neighborhood pet store. He was mine the same day (we had lost a 13-year-old pitbull rescue just a few months earlier). That was 2 years ago last week.

These dogs are loving, wonderful creatures. I wish I could take a picture of mine with his head on my knee while I am typing this and upload it. There ARE pitbull rescues who will take him if you can’t find a home for him. But I am hoping someone opens their heart to him like I did that day.

I tell my boy all the time that it was the luckiest day of MY life!

  43. PLEASE be VERY VERY careful and check the backgrounds of anybody wishing to rescue this beautiful little puppy. Dog fighting is a horrible crime. Unfortunately, there are bad people in this world that still do it. They would jump at the opportunity to this little girl and cause her harm. Of course there are also VERY good people in this world, like yourself. Just be certain that you know the difference when finding her a home. Good Luck and God Bless. Thank’s for being a hero.

  44. Hi, I live in Cape May County NJ, I had a mixed Pit for 15 yrs that I adopted after seeing her on a pet spot thing on the local news, Abbey (at the time the shelter named her Skinny Minnie, she was extremely underweight) was a GREAT dog, before they found her she had been used to “train” pits to fight, when they did find her she had 5 dogs attacking her, chained to a tree, covered with scabs when I got her, took my family a little while to relax and realize what a great dog she was! When we put her down due to illness and age, my toy poodle also around 15 (who I got to give her a friend) was just lost, and needed a friend’ we now have a choc.lab pup but if this dog needs a home I would love to have her, we have a huge fenced in yard and take the Lab (Tucker) for walks every night. No kids, and my dogs are spoiled rotten and this dog needs and deserves that!

  45. Did you check to make sure she does not have a Micro Chip identification tag? Good luck, she is a sweetheart. Thanks for helping her so much!

  46. Free bedbugs and crabs with every stay!

i remember being young poor and stupid and took a date to the St. Marks Place Motel in the village for some fun. You have to be drunk to use one of those rooms

  47. When I got home I gave my 12 year old pittie rescue a big kiss and cuddle after reading this story. They deserve it all the love we can give them!

  48. I think she is supposed to be with you! I know it is probably not what you intended but she sounds like she is already a part of your life. You are her saint and someday she may be yours! If I were you I would keep her. She is precious! Good Luck!

  49. Thank you for rescuing this sweet dog and posting..it ended up all over facebook and from there, just about everywhere else. You’ve gotten some great advice..mostly about being extremely cautious about who gets this dog. I personally wrote and gave you rescue leads and phone numbers. Please contact them, especially Beth. This dog has an angel riding on her shoulders to have been found and taken to a caring home where you reached out to the canine community for help. Make sure there is no chip in her, as she could have been stolen and dumped.

I recently boarded a beautiful pit at Bed & Biscuit and loved every moment of her company. They are amazing dogs. http://www.bednbiscuit.com
Let me know if you need more help contacting experienced rescue people. Shelley

  50. That’s a might expensive fancy collar she’s wearing..make sure that she wasn’t stolen and then dumped for whatever reason. Someone took the time to train her and she looks healthy and well fed. This might be someone’s beloved pet. Post to craig’s list under lost/found and pets all over NYC and NJ and Westchester.

  51. Three of my friends simultaneously emailed me your post about a gorgeous grey canine beauty. Thank you so much to you and your friend for rescuing her and giving her such loving care. I still can’t understand how people can abandon pets, especially in such a cruel way. She must have an amazing spirit to have made it through such a storm.

I’ve been searching for a dog to adopt, and this girl seems the perfect match for me. I’d love to meet her. I have two questions:

    1) What is her height / weight?

I want to make sure she’s a size my building will allow. She seems so from her pictures.

    2) Do you think she’d get along with a low-key, playful, 1 year old cat (who incidentally likes to play fetch)?

My roommate and I have devised a wonderful way to keep the animals safely separated while we’re gone, but of course, I’d want both animals to feel generally comfortable knowing the other is in the apartment.

Feel free to contact me via email (encrypted in reply). I look forward to hearing from you soon. Give her a hug for me!

    Kind regards,
    Kari Morris

  52. She is a wonderful dog for a responsible adult or a couple. She has to be tested with kids and other animals. A previous writer is correct, her collar is dangerously tight. Good luck to you and her!!

  53. If I didn’t have two dachshunds, I’d take her in a heartbeat. She looks so much like my Bella, who was rescued from a kill shelter in NYC when she was about 6months old. We got her at a time when everything you heard about them was B A D. She was the “Poster Pittie Girl” and was friends with EVERYONE on the block…..she even turned my Mom’s negative attitude about pits. It is true , though, that it really takes someone who is willing to work with them and not fear them. They are so smart and so loyal and I was never for one minute sorry I took my girl in. She was my good friend and I miss her still.
Keep us posted. I’m trying to think if I know someone who would be a good fit. She’ll find a good home. She deserves it.
p.s. Did you check to see if someone is looking for her at the shelter, etc.? I hate to think someone actually tied up such a beautiful, gentle creature on such a horrible night! She doesn’t look abused or mistreated from your pics. Looks pretty well loved.
    Lesa

  54. I have several followers on Twitter and FB that love animals. I shared this with them. I’m at my limit for furry friends unfortunately–this seems like a lovely Pit. Some of my favorite dogs have been Pits, they are incredibly loyal and loving animals to the right owner. Good luck!

  55. Hello Ladies,

I have a Pit bull that I rescued from the Conneticut Shelter that was associated with Best Friends of Utah. The shelter is a non-kill shelter if your leads don’t pan out let me know. I can give you all the info I got with Albert. Good Luck she is a sweetie:) Jeff from Pittie Rescue rocks as far as info.

    Nathalie

  56. Thank you to you and your friend for being awesome and helping her! What goes around, comes around…to you guys, and also to the ones responsible for tying her up and leaving her with nothing. The world needs more people like you and your friend! I hope she finds a loving forever-home, good luck.

  57. She is beautiful. Pits have a bad rep for nothing. Any dog can be “turned” bad by a bad owner, but all are born sweet. I LOVE the shot of her sleeping/ She is one lucky pup to be saved!

  58. Please make sure that whatever potential home/rescue you DO find, to SCREEN carefully. There are lots of aholes out there who will use the dog to fight and rescues that are just not as reputable as they seem. PLEASE PLEASE check references and vet references and I don’t know, let me or anyone else know if you need help checking out a rescue’s reputation.

  59. if you can get her to cincinnati or as close as possible she has a home with a big yard and loving parwnts tolook out for her

  60. Just wanted you to know that we are interested and ready to take her. We live in Rochester, NY. I sent you an email with details and questions as well as a phone number. Just wanted to also let you know on this thread so that you look out for the email. Looking forward to meeting her and setting up arrangements with you.

  61. Wow…she is the female twin to my blue Pitt, Roscoe. Who is the sweetest dog I have ever owned. Easiest to train out of all my dogs also. The rep doesn’t follow all of them. She sounds like a sweetie too. I pray she finds a nice home! Sounds like she will…

  62. TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE OFFERED TO TAKE THIS BEAUTIFULL GIRL SO SHE WOULD NOT END UP AT A KILL SHELTER. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PITS JUST LIKE HER ON THE DEATH LISTS AT THE SHELTERS DAYS, HOURS AND MINUTES AWAY FROM BEING KILLED. PLEASE
KNOW THAT JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT IN A NEWS STORY DOES NOT MEAN THEY DO NOT EXIST. THEY DO AND THEY ARE GOING TO DIE IF YOU DO NOT STEP UP AND DO THE RIGHT THING. I PRAY YOU WILL

  63. God bless you and your friend, and may God help you to find this sweet-faced, sweet-natured young Amstaff (American Staffordshire Terrier; yes, purebred) a forever home soon. She certainly deserves it.

  64. I found a small brown kitten New Years eve on a pile of snow outside Vandalia Houses in Brooklyn,N.Y.. I Kept the kitten and we are very happy together. I think the cold weather brings out the worse in people. Years ago I’d say be careful on those hot summer nights but lately its the cold.

  65. Just wanted to add that whoever got to be the dogs new best friend..I hope they dont live in one of the states that are trying to outlaw owning pitbulls. I have a pitbull mix and my daughter owns two..with the proper training..they are the best dogs ever..they are full of love. Unfortunately..thanks to Mr. Vicks and the likes of many others…these dogs are looked as the biggest danger ever. How do you kill a breed because of what humans have done?

  66. I’m very interested in her !!!! Is she still available ??? Please let me know !!!

    George

  67. also if someone wants to adopt her. make sure you get to know the person and Q and A them thoroughly . there are lots of people that will use her for fighting, as a bait dog or sell her to Lab’s. Its just crucial what people are doing. be careful!!

  68. If you can get her to me in Florida, I will take her!! I am the proud owner of a 10 year old pit bull and will most definetly welcome another one in my home!!

  69. I dunno if it helped, but I tweeted this several times over when I first saw your tweet. So glad she’s found a home now. =D

  70. Hi. Your post was sent to me by a friend who knows I’m involved in pit bull rescue here in MA. While we have no open foster homes at the moment, I wanted to give you a couple of links for your friend. These are pit bull rescues in NY that are no kill. He should check them out. Thanks for helping this poor abandoned girl.

  71. Hi! I am so happy for that sweet girl to have been rescued by you guys and to have found a wonderful home! Those creeps that tied her to the bridge actually did her a huge favor!! I know you are probably not planning to become a placement agency for pitbulls, lol, but I have a terrible problem. Last week a pitbull was “given” to me, which was basically my frantic attempt at keeping her from going to the shelter. She is a sweet, loving girl but my HOA doesn’t allow “aggressive” breeds and my next door neighbor who is a cop has already said he will turn her in. I am having no luck finding even a foster home for her, As you know finding a home for a pitbull is next to impossible. You have been in contact with hundreds of people with big hearts, will you please help me save her???
Thank you being so sweet to that dog and thanks in advance for any help you may be willing to give,
    Corinne Smith

  72. Thanks for looking after to the little dog. I live in India but Felt really bad and sad for her.I hope by now somebody might have adopted her.

  73. Thanks for looking after the little dog. I live in India but felt really bad and sad for her.I hope by now somebody might have adopted her.

  74. I just wanted to say thank you for taking in this gorgeous dog, and finding her a home. I’d be lying if I said the story didn’t make me cry, and I hope the horrible people who left her tied to a bridge someday find themselves left somewhere to die alone. As a pit bull owner, I can only say that they are the best, most loyal, sweet dogs whose reputation is unfounded. I hope more people realize that it’s not the breed, it’s the owners.

Again, thank you for being such great person. And your friend is as well. It gives me hope that there are people like both of you out there.

  75. I am a glass half full person, and it has occurred to me that perhaps she got loose from her owner (who has kept her in good health, trained her well and made her the sweetheart that she is), and someone hooked her to the fence (because they could not take her in) and to keep her out of the street so the owner could find her. Perhaps that owner is out trudging the streets looking for her and crying. Has every effort been made to notify authorities that she has been found?

  76. Great outcome! I hope the adoption works. I assume the dog was checked for a microchip. …I just had to return 2 dogs I adopted to North Shore Animal League, two young puppies. Puppies are used, I suspect, to get people in the door. I did NOT visit the shelter to adopt; nor did I want to save a puppy. … I gave two dogs a great/expensive week! The Terrier is very adoptable, and will have no trouble. The 2nd dog was my best friend’s choice: a Border Collie pup. I know this breed, and I am too old to care for it for 15 years. So is he. He’s over 70. And yet, North Shore gladly took his $250. …

A conversation about intelligent adoption is going on, but popular feelings can get in the way. What you did, fostering the dog until it was placed is the most noble thing to do! Taking in an unknown, staying with it, until proper adoption.

I, on the other hand, walked into a shelter to experience a shelter. Unprepared, saying “I am just looking, today.” After several hours there, I lost touch with my reality at home. I took care of 2 dogs all week, at great expense, but I worried about dying on them. I’m HIV+/AIDS. Healthy for now, but in 15 years? I was too ashamed to bring that up when the rat-race started. We were encouraged to fill out adoption forms “for later” – “good for 3 months.”

I wrote already, via Facebook, that out of 70 pets adopted last Sunday at North Shore Animal League, 7 were returned on the following Saturday alone. They get returns every day of the week.

So, my heart bled enough to try to change my life. I considered giving up my apartment in Manhattan to live in my ex-‘s house: for the dogs. The wildest schemes were invented to keep them. But I was the one who sat with them 24/7. And I began to research, yesterday – after the fact. I knew things would go badly, in the future.

Those who want to save a dog or cat, or other animal; it’s a noble notion. But with 4 million needless mercy-killings per year in the USA, are we up to the long-term commitment?

Anyone considering pet adoption needs to ask all friends if it is okay with them. At the beginning, especially with puppies, it is like having a baby. There are counselors galore to help with the panic.

Most of all, do not hate yourself for giving an animal a chance: to discover that it won’t work. No one benefits from a bad relationship. Get out, fast. Then, do research. In NYC, it’s easy. The Humane Society, Animal Control, and dozens of other shelters/organisations can help us determine how we can help.

  77. Those moments when I get overwhelmed by all the stories of the hideous things people do to animals, a beautiful story like yours pops up and I am resurrected. Bless you!

  79. Hello.

A friend and I have been working hard to try and save dogs similar to this one and it is very difficult to find them kind and capable forever homes (as 90% of them are pits and pit bull mixes). Did you happen to receive other proposals for homes that we could investigate?

Please let me know and thanks!
