Gridlock Busters
I was waiting forever in heavy traffic on Norfolk Street to turn onto the Williamsburg Bridge when I noticed this sign. It seems pretty old (I’m sure that crossed circle was once red), and the more I thought about it, the more I decided that it has to be the most abstract official traffic sign…
A Walking Blood Cell in LIC
Nothing is more surreal than crossing the street in Long Island City yesterday beside what I can only guess is a giant, glasses-wearing red blood cell, and overhearing him talking to the guy next to him about how hard it is to find an affordable 2-bedroom in the city. They went into a Mexican restaurant,…
And To Think That I Saw Bees On Mulberry Street
I was just going through an old hard drive when I came across some pictures of one of the odder things I think I’ve ever come across scouting… Last August, I was scouting around Little Italy when I suddenly noticed a crowd of people forming at the corner of Mulberry & Grand. On closer inspection,…
The Legend of the Metrocard Bike
When I saw it today at 59th and 8th, I didn’t realize I had come across a legend. At the time, it seemed like a clever novelty: a bike completely decked out in Metrocards (for non-New Yorkers, a Metrocard is a NYC subway pass). Great job, right? I like the basket work… I also dig…
The Aristocrat: The Mystery of the West Village Camper
I swear the camper in this picture has been parking on this street for years. Years. Right around the corner from this block is a Manhattan office building that is routinely rented out by film productions. I’ve worked out of there on numerous movies, and over the course of a job, you end up driving…

Who knows where Marshall’s may have originated. Radio Shack started out as a leather craft supply store.
If you mean Marshalls the clothing store, its origin is well-documented. It’s never been anything except a retail company. A group of businessmen opened up the first store in suburban Boston in 1956.
Marshall’s Fish Store has been gone for like 10 years now. No one to file a Cease and Desist Order against anymore.
You should also see the EZ Gas station sign on 1&9 if you’re talking about signs looking familiar.
There’s an eerie similarity between the logo for Makita Cosmetics (http://i.imgur.com/ACpz21b.jpg) and Makita Tools (http://i.imgur.com/r2OC2PP.png). Not exactly the same, but close enough to know better.
I don’t know when Marshall’s the fish store opened, but it’s probably older than Marshalls clothes store, which dates back to 1956. So it’s more likely that the fish store has the first claim on the logo.
You’d be incorrect Karina. Radio Shack was started in 1921 by two brothers in Boston who wanted to provide equipment for ham radio operators. It was purchased by Tandy Corp. in 1962. Tandy originally was a leather good company.
And to answer the question, yes it does look familiar. In the typography world there are many fonts but not all that many that people use and it is common for companies to spend a lot of money to make sure they don’t have type that looks like anyone elses. Still it happens quite often.
Awesome. I stay in that building in 2013 when I was on vacation for 20 days. On the inside is quite large and from the roof you can see a great skyline of manhattan
