Hogwarts In Manhattan: The 1,000 Gargoyles & Grotesques of City College
Last week, I took a trip up to 138th Street and Amsterdam to scout a location I’ve been meaning to visit for the longest time: the City College of New York. City College is one of those great places in the city where you step through the gates… …and suddenly feel like you’ve been transported…
Remnants of the Old W-burg Shopping Districts
I love seeing these signs gracing lamp poles in the North Williamsburg area because, to my understanding, they were put up long before the area went through its current day gentrification. Sort of like if you put in shopping district signs, maybe a shopping district will follow? But North Williamsburg is not the only neighborhood…
A Very Creepy House in Brooklyn
Scouting NY is having a Halloween contest in which you submit a picture of your favorite local eerie property and win tickets to NY’s infamous Nightmare Haunted House! This is what my submission would be… This is what I imagine it looks like when a house possessed by evil opens one eye to stare at…
There’s Something Wrong With This Staten Island Church
Last weekend, I was scouting some locations on Staten Island, and the last on my list was this church at the southern tip of the island. At first, everything about the 185-foot tall Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne seemed perfectly normal. But as I was taking some angle shots, something started to feel…off….
The Most Amazing Room In Queens
Last week, I went the New York Hall of Science in Queens to take some scout pictures, my first time visiting. The Hall of Science was originally built for the 1964 World’s Fair, and while it’s gone through many renovations over the years, this oddly-shaped cement portion speckled with black dots clearly dates back to…
Evil Birds, Ghost Ads, Forgotten Alleys…
Every Friday, I try to put together a post of random tidbits from my week in scouting. Enjoy! While scouting in Tribeca earlier in the week, I was glad to see that my favorite Manhattan ghost ad (a sign, billboard or painting advertising something long gone) is still in decent shape… Located at the corner…

The number of crackheads showing up at the regional offices…
I’ve been here. It’s across the street from a bowling alley, and I can tell you from experience, when you stumble out of that bowling alley more than a little drunk at 1 AM and see the White Castle across the street, you probably won’t be so impressed at the regional office’s adherence to the brand.
If they lobby doesn’t have bulletproof plastic dividers and a haze of grease on anything then it is all a sham.
Have you seen the headquarters? http://www.interestingideas.com/ii/pix/castle4.jpg
(We used to drive past it on the way to my grandparents’ growing up.)
Even the national headquarters building in Ohio has a bit of the castle motif.
Back in the Summer of 1981, I was with a group of friends coming back from a club on Long Island late at night and we stopped at the WC in Lynbrook. While we were inside ordering food, one of my friends was robbed at knifepoint while urinating behind the building. Two weeks later, we stopped again convinced we would be safe this time. This time someone ripped a chain from another friends neck. We laughed about it then and everytime we occassionally get togethe since. But it is wild how White Castle is so synonymous with crime for most people.
I go past this place all the time. It looks like a White Castle and a post office had a baby. I think it’s the flag pole that gives it the post office vibe.
