Inside The Fletcher Mansion on Fifth Avenue
If you’ve ever been annoyed at the fact that most of Fifth Avenue’s mansions probably don’t want you knocking at their front door, do yourself a favor and check out one most don’t realize is open to the public: the Ukrainian Institute at the corner of 79th Street and Fifth Ave, built in 1899 as…
They’re Watching You Above Madison Square Park
Note: This exhibition is now over. There’s a really great new art installation in and around Madison Square Park… …which serves as a reminder that you should stop worrying about looking like a tourist… …and look up once in a while. Grand Central Rats
Thousands of people go into Grand Central through the Lexington Ave entrance every day. I always wonder how many look up and see the rats also desperately trying to get in. I’m not quite sure I fully understand the symbolism, but, according to Forgotten NY, The Graybar building was once the nation’s focal point for…
Elephants on East 10th Street

Garth and Eric – my bad, should really stop writing these things up after midnight…
Funny thing about this firehouse is that the same architects built an economy version of it on 518 W. 170th Street.
One more thing: I work one block down, on Bond Street, and it seems that every other week that street is hijacked by a film crew, including their large dressing room trucks and catering stands. What’s the deal with Bond Street?
Great building, designed by Flagg & Chambers – Earnest Flag also did the Scribner’s Building on 5th Avenue, with a similar great arch. I believe this was the home of the Fire Commisioner when it built.
